Remembering Where Life Was Shaped
Glenn '68 and Marybeth Watkins '68 Gessele recall their time at Union College with fondness-from great friends, to the cold weather, to the spiritual atmosphere. Marybeth remembers her favorite times were worships in the dorm and listening to Elder Bresee's sermons. "They were the inspiration to get through another week," she says
Glen remembers the week of prayer during his freshman year when he felt the call to be a minister. It was Union College that brought Glen and Marybeth together and helped them discover their life goal of ministry. "We met in the cafeteria. Glen was a checker," Marybeth says.
Glen remembers going to the top of the ad building to practice preaching sermons to the pigeons. "I don't know if there are any converted pigeons out there," Glen says chuckling.
While they have remembered a number of academies and colleges in their estate plans, Union is one that is near and dear to both their hearts. Having worked in the Adventist Church, Glen has seen the value of undesignated gifts. "We are going to leave it up to God and the Union College administration to decide where the best place to use our money is," he says. "We don't have a large income to give from, but we've chosen to give what we can now and to give through our will."
When asked if they had any advice for someone thinking about giving a gift to Union, Glen replied, "The most important way to give is while you're still alive. Secondly, make an estate gift for after you're gone."
