Gilbert and Rosella Jorgensen have strong ties to Union College. Both graduated from Union, Gilbert in 1948 and Rosella in 1940. Gilbert says his uncle was the head of the chemistry department, for which the science building was named.
Although he took some time during college to serve in the Navy, Gilbert returned to Union to earn his degrees in history and religion. "I've got a whole lot of memories. One of my favorites was traveling to all the camp meetings with Dr. Woods and the quartet. Dr. Woods pulled a small trailer with a ham radio, to draw people to the young people's tent. Then we'd tell them about Union College and the quartet would sing."
After Union, Gilbert went on to get his master's degree at the seminary and then returned to his alma mater to teach for a year while Dr. Dick reactivated the Medical Cadet Corp. He spent several years teaching at Southwestern, but when his wife became ill, he changed his career. "I became a nurse anesthetist and worked for the Veterans Administration hospital for 26 years."
The Jorgensens decided to remember Union College through a gift annuity because they feel it is important to give back to the school that contributed so much to their lives. "I love Union with all my heart and want to see as many students as possible attend. I honestly believe that Union College fulfills a great necessity of giving the best education that we have in the denomination."
